I guess I couldn't! Although, I have often wondered what it would be like to be live in the days before electricity.
Early last night I was reminded of just how much I depend on lighting, a dishwasher, a microwave, a washing machine, coffee maker and air conditioning.
You may think I am being a baby, but after a day that was unseasonably hot and humid we lost power and I seemed to have lost my usually pleasant disposition (haha!) needless to say I became rather "testy".
Here's why: Our entire block was wiped out (power-wise) due to the lightening and thunderstorm, not so much the rain but the damage the wind did to a huge tree across the street.
For years now I have wondered when a branch from this huge tree was going to crack and fall. I thought the branch that would break was the large one looming over their roofline. It was not!!
Instead the branch that fell decided to fall on the power lines and bent the power pole. It somehow missed their car, which was parked in the driveway and luckily no one was walking or driving past their house at the time or they would have been killed.
Of course everyone came out of their house to see what had happened. Cameras in hand, although it was too dark to take any pictures. While the crowd gathered around chatting and gawking at the tree and the huge branch laying on the street Oshawa PUC decided to throw the power switch back on.
If you want to see a crowd disperse quickly, throw the switch... you do and you'll get a loud "popping" sound, followed by an electric current traveling underfoot. This sound and vibration will remind the curious onlookers that standing near downed power lines is not the brightest of ideas.
Needless to say the power is back on now, though it was off for far too long (in my opinion).
I had to boil water on the barbecue to make a pot of coffee this a.m.
The up side to this story, other than no one being hurt was this... candles are just dandy, though in my house... not always handy!
BUT when one is a papier mache artist and seems to concentrate much of their work on on candy containers and lanterns, one tends to have an abundance of them to light with battery operated tea lights. hee hee!
I'll be back in the next few days with pics of my newest finished pieces ;) ~ Lori
