Veggies, tea and W.I.P.

Meant to post this yesterday, but time was not on my side.

I have had a little bit of fun recently trying my hand at making figural candy containers. I've done many bobble heads in the past, but these to me are slightly more fun... even though their wee heads don't wiggle and jiggle their plump bodies make me giggle.

Oh and the teapots ~ I could not resist trying to make more hollow ornaments. So I thought I switch it up and do something different. Although not seen in this picture they will be getting lids, but not until they are painted and the eye and mouth inserts are in place. Sugar containers, teacups, plates and who knows what may begin to accompany these pots. I may even be inspired to create an entire tea service... only time will tell! ~ Lori

We have squatters, or is that squeakers?

Every year it seems we have a new family invading our home or rather the exterior of it. Usually we have a family of House Sparrows who build their nest below our upstairs window AC unit.

I don't know what possesses a bird to build a nest in such a small, cramped space. But every year for the past few years they have. This year they must have decided to build elsewhere.

Last year was terrible!! During the day if I ventured upstairs I'd hear the squawking of their tiny offspring. I say terrible because if you turn on the AC, what does that do to the birds? What do you end up ingesting and inhaling because of those birds?
And why did it sound like one of them was being squashed? The cries were heart wrenching to say the least, but I never did come across a tiny body laying in the garden bed below, so maybe it was just hungry. At least that's what I like to tell myself.

One year we had House Sparrows try to build a nest on top of one of the columns that supports our front porch roof, but that wasn't enough space so they shifted part of the nest to a string of Christmas lights. Needless to say a strong wind destroyed their nest.

Birds seem to build their temporary homes in the craziest places. I say this because this Spring the House Sparrows tried to set up shop in our roller blind of all things. I guess "Rock a bye baby" applies to birds too... or maybe not?! I don't think this particular bird could appreciate that it was violently rocking back and forth in the wind much of the time... or maybe it's because a "bigger" bird decided to stake their claim on the column above and to the right of said roller blind.

In the end, it really doesn't matter why the House Sparrow chose to leave. I'm pretty happy with the family who decided to stay. They are very polite, pretty darn quiet and not too messy (yet). The tiny trio in the nest pictured above were a little scary looking last week, (see pic at top of post) but seven days seems to work wonders in "bird world" because this week they are starting to look like the beautiful baby Robin's that they are! ~ Lori

New goodies are on their way to eBay

This week I've got three new items up for auction on eBay.

First up is an "Old Crone" ornament ~ she's got a really stunning, toothy grin and is further glammed up with a mole, bright red lipstick and faux "feather boa" made from vintage crepe.

She's followed by a "Surprised Party" Turnip candy container & latern ~ he's wearing a very festive party hat, although I'm thinking he's not much of a "party guy", judging by his expression.

Lastly there's the long awaited "Owl" piece. I know, I know... it's only taken me 4 years to sculpt one ;)
This piece is entitled "Who Goes There?" ~ it features a cute duo of Jacks startled by an owl who's come to rest in between them.

Thank you for taking a peek! ~ Lori

Making some good progress

Thought I'd go ahead and do another post to show progress made since yesterday.
The three "Party Balls" aka. candy containers that can hold a fair amount of candy or a flickering - battery operated tealight are 100% done! YAY!
The Owls with the Jack O' Lanterns on either side just need some "leafy" trim around the base of each pumpkin. The "Veggie man" is almost complete too, he just needs a base to stand on. Although he can stand by himself, I am wary of him falling off somebody's shelf or mantle and crashing to the ground.
That's all for this weekend... and to all my fellow Canadian's "Happy Victoria Day!"... Let's hope we get some sunshine!~ Lori

My WIP's for this week

As promised, here's a pic of my current works in progress. Keep in mind that every piece pictured here is yet to be finished.... never mind the fact that the lighting is just dreadful. Sorry, it's too dim outside at the moment to cart them all out there for a better pic.

I am hoping to get at least a couple of these completed and up for auction next Tuesday... no promises though, because it's a long weekend. Yahoo!

Have a great weekend! ~ Lori

This week's eBay goodies

This week's goodies include a Skelly Head ornament. He's rather cute (in my opinion) with his curious expression and then there's a Black Cat's Head candy ball. He seems to be a little dismayed about something... I don't know what, because he wouldn't say!

Thanks for taking a peek! ~ Lori

Happy Mother's Day... and the mixed emotions...

that come with being one.

I say that, because as I look back at the past 9 + years of "Mother-dom" (if that is indeed a word) I am awe struck by the affect it's had on me.

If it wasn't for that sweet baby boy coming into our lives I'm not sure I'd be telling you this same story.

When Bailey went to school full time we couldn't afford to pay for after school day care. While I stayed home, I became bored with being a "Mom" and a "housewife" (yikes, I hate that word!)

The internet had opened up a huge, new world to me and with that "new world" came the online friends who inspired me to begin creating.

But what was I going to create? ~ I was going to try my hand at paper mache... or papier mache to those of us who prefer the "French" term.

If you could see the bust I sculpted in high school, you'd laugh... and I do mean laugh! If you could see the life drawings I did in College you'd really be rolling on the floor. I'm not sure why I chose to sculpt, because I couldn't before and I certainly can't draw... other than very rough sketches.

BUT, put a wad of clay in my hands and things start to flow. My mind starts to wander and my fingers subconsciously do the rest. I don't plan or sketch out what I'm going to sculpt (most of the time) it just happens. The flood gates open and the emotions start to pour out.

If you look above... the pictures of pieces past will say it all. It's not easy being a "Mom". If it was... all my sculpts would be "Happy" and that would be tragically BORING!

Happy Mother's Day to all "Moms"... and to my own "Mom" who had to deal with me... a HUGE "thanks". ~ Lori

Sneak peek at what'll be on eBay tonight!

Three new pieces will make their debut on eBay tonight, starting at 9:00 pm.

"Greeny, Meany" named as such because of his disgusted sneer is a pale ivory and green pumpkin ornament with paper inserts for his eyes and mouth. He's trimmed with vintage crepe paper fringe.

Next up is a Black cat's head ornament whose got a mouth full of pointy teeth to match his nasty expression. His neckline is trimmed with vintage ~ fringed crepe festooning.

And last, but not least is "Wartimer". He's a warty old fellow who's skeptical expression says a lot about him. Painted in pale ivory and subtle shades of green.
He's topped with a vintage style ~ Halloween party hat that proclaims "Happy Halloween". "Wartimer" can be used to hold candy or as a lantern. With the addition of a battery operated light his facial features will glow.

Thanks for looking! ~ Lori

Let the Hunt Begin!

It's the stroke of midnight and the hunt has begun. The key is not here, for I'm not the one. Go back to EHAG ~ enjoy the travel. Finding its' keeper is the mystery... you've yet to unravel!

... And although I don't hold the key... there's a sneak peek (below) at what the winner will receive from me.

Oh, Happy PFATT Day!!!

I hate to brag, but... I just became a PFATT member, aka a "PFATTie", whoo hoo!

Do I sound excited? That's because I am!!

I remember (very fondly) coming across PFATT auctions quite a few years ago and thinking "WOW" I wonder who they are? I soon found out... and for years now I have been sitting back admiring the work of these artists, just waiting for the day I too could be PFATT!

Have a great day! ~ Lori
